If you are shopping for a strong western pleasure contender, meet “Luna”!! She has been shown successfully by youth riders of varying ages and amateurs just getting back to the show pen. Her strength is most definitely in the western pleasure - she is so steady and isnt affected by nervous legged riders… she has one speed: Slow. However, you can convince her to extend enough to look pretty in the horsemanship and trail. Youth walk-trot riders look adorable on her for the english classes, but she has no “canter” gear, just a locked in, steady lope.
Both her jog and her lope are so smooth and comfortable to ride - just like a comfortable rocking chair floating around the pen. Luna knows her job very well, is pretty forgiving of rider errors, and doesn’t need regular riding (and definitely no lunging needed, I think you end up doing more work than she does lol) - perfect for someone who wants to keep their horse at home. She loads and hauls like a seasoned show horse should settling into new places with ease. Clips without the need for a twitch, even her ears. Stands like a statue for bathing. Overall very easy to have around the farm… assuming you can afford her hay bill lol - she is a grazer and keeping hay available to her most of the day is important to her.
On the ground she is pretty sharp in the showmanship with quick set ups, crisp turns, and great stops. She lets the little kiddos haul her around the arena and she stands quietly in the cross ties for grooming. Some people will ask if she is “Mare-ish”, and she does have certain specific situations where she may (not always) put her ears back but 90% of the time she is a happy girl. She has been on and off regumate - primarily on just in the spring to cover the big spring heat cycle (eliminate the extra peeing) and then can be off after that if you prefer. She wears front shoes and barefoot behind, stands great for the farrier. Once a year she will get her hocks injected, but otherwise no other injections needed. Since she grows a heavy winter coat, the owners had her tested for cushings - she came back “borderline”, so they put her on a half tab of Prascend just in case … however they tested her in October, a prime time for false positives and inaccurate results (as stated right on the lab report)- I would recommend a retest during the more optimal time as she may not need it. Otherwise, she is sound, and a wonderful girl to enjoy riding and showing. She really enjoys the little kiddos and those that prefer the slower pace of horse show life. She has taken such good care of her owner and her kiddos with lots of success, but they have grown to love and show the faster paced ranch classes instead. She is ready for the 2026 show season, are you?!
